Press Release - 9th March 2017

Lesley Graham (Chair, Lewis & Harris Sports Council) and Angus Campbell (Chairman of the WIDT)

Lesley Graham (Chair, Lewis & Harris Sports Council) and Angus Campbell (Chairman of the WIDT) following the launch of the new Sports Council Transocean Grant, which is now available to members of the Lewis & Harris and Uist & Barra Sports Councils.

Western Isles Development Trust

The Western Isles Development Trust (“WIDT”) has agreed to work with the Lewis & Harris and Uist & Barra sports councils to distribute the £60,000 fund donated to the WIDT by Transocean following the Transocean Winner oil rig incident near Dalbeg, Lewis last year.

The fund will be used to help young people and others in education who apply for support to allow them to access and participate in sporting events where the financial consequences of participating in such events may otherwise prove to be a deterrent.

The sports councils will be responsible for inviting and processing applications for funding under their own terms and conditions. The use of the fund will be kept under review by the WIDT. £15,000 of the Fund is to be transferred to the sports councils (£10,000 to the Lewis & Harris Sports Council and £5,000 to the Uist & Barra Sports Council) each year for 2 years and £7,500 (split in the same proportions) each year in the following 2 years. The WIDT will decide at a later date whether the balance of the fund should also be distributed through the sports councils.

Chairman of the WIDT, Cllr Angus Campbell, said: “The Comhairle discussed Community benefit with Transocean and the company wanted to pay tribute to the communities of the Western Isles and we felt that there should be a fund for young people across the islands. Often youth groups struggle to raise funds for attending mainland sporting events and this will provide an opportunity to bid for money for that purpose.”
