Comhairle nan Eilean Siar
Press Release - 9th March 2017
The Iolaire Working Group met today, Thursday 9 March 2017, to continue consideration of plans for commemorative events in the run up the 100th anniversary of the worst Royal Navy peacetime maritime disaster.
The group will be working closely with community councils, historical societies, schools and youth groups throughout the islands. The group is also in discussion with the Scottish Commemorations Panel regarding the national contribution to the commemoration events. Those discussions will be ongoing in the run up to January 2019.
Cllr Norman A MacDonald, Chairman of the Iolaire MOWG, said: “The impact of the Iolaire tragedy was felt in our communities throughout the islands and is recognized as being hugely significant in the context of the WWI commemorations. The Iolaire MOWG has commemoration events lined up and we look forward to working with our communities and partners to ensure that the sailors who lost their lives that night and all in our communities who suffered as a result are remembered as they ought to be.”
