Western Isles Countryside Access Programme

The Western Isles Countryside Access Programme was established in April 2004 and will run for three years. The aim of the Programme is to upgrade approximately 195km of paths throughout the Western Isles. Of these, 15km will be upgraded to all abilities standard.

The programme is led by Comhairle nan Eilean Siar and jointly funded by Scottish Natural Heritage, Western Isles Enterprise, the Comhairle and the Highlands and Islands Special Transitional Programme.

The paths range from mountain routes, requiring a high degree of fitness and mountain awareness, to shorter routes around settlements and through flat machair land.

Improvements will include upgrades to drainage, construction of bridges, surfacing, gates and the provision of signage and waymarking where appropriate.
