Biological Recording Activity Day

Curracag : Outer Hebrides Natural History Society

Come along to our Activity Day to find out about the new Outer Hebrides Recording Project and why it is important. Discover how you can take part and play a vital role in safeguarding our natural environment. Have a go at biological recording at the LNR and begin to explore the wonders of our wildlife.

Saturday 6 August at 2 pm in North Loch Eynort, South Uist
A coastal walk along the edge of Loch Eynort looking for pollinating insects - bumblebees, hoverflies, wasps, moths and butterflies

Genebank on the Machair – Summer Site Visits

Saturday 11th and 18th July 2009 at 2pm at the Lews Castle College, Lionacleit Campus, Benbecula

SAC based researcher Maria Scholten is running a small oat trial on Lionacleit machair in Benbecula. Students from Sgoil Lionacleit’s new national crofting course have been involved in the trial.

Visits are planned on Saturday the 11 and 18 July at 2pm at the Lews Castle College in Lionacleit, with an illustrated introduction about genebank work, Scottish landraces and machair crofting, followed at 2.30 pm by a visit to the trial site.  We can also have a look at the wild plants and arable weed diversity on Lionacleit machair.
