Western Isles Transitional Programme Strategy
INTRODUCTION
Living on the western periphery of Europe, the people of the Western Isles have always had to face the social and economic challenges inherent in cultures perceived as remote.
For many generations community has been the foundation of our cultural life and we recognise the importance of the character and traditional strength of our communities to the development of the local economy. By putting our people first, we can help ensure that our islands will prosper for generations to come.
The unspoilt environment of the Western Isles is increasingly perceived as a major economic asset, and the real potential of a high quality of life is now acknowledged both within and beyond these shores.
The purpose of the Western Isles Transitional Programme Strategy is to provide a framework which will assist agencies and organisations in the Western Isles to submit quality and focused proposals to the Highlands and Islands Special Transitional Programme 2000-2006.
We believe that a renewed focus on building confident communities, the continued diversification of our economy and the exploitation of new activities will provide positive platforms for sustainable growth. By working together as a partnership development can be integrated and thus maximised for the benefit of the Western Isles.
