Election Office
Comhairle nan Eilean Siar and Elections
Comhairle nan Eilean Siar administers all Local, National and European elections together with by-elections and elections for Community Councils, School Boards and those relating to the Land Reform (Scotland) Act 2003.
The Returning Officer
The Chief Executive of Comhairle nan Eilean Siar is the Returning Officer and is responsible for the above elections. In the run up to an election the Returning Officer will set up an Election Team who will take on the day to day administration in this respect.
Scottish Parliament and Local Council elections take place every four years, on the first Thursday in May. The next elections for both the Scottish Parliament and Local Councils will be held on 3 May 2007. Elections give you, the voter, the chance to have your say on who you would like to represent you for the next four years.
E-Counting
The decision to use e-counting in the Scottish Parliament and Local Authority Elections on 3 May 2007 was taken jointly by Scottish Ministers and the Secretary of State for Scotland and announced in June 2006. This system has been thoroughly tested by the Executive along with the Scotland Office and all Returning Officers in Scotland.
The procedure involves scanning the ballot papers and performing the count electronically. It has been confirmed that Comhairle nan Eilean Siar will be provided with electronic counting facilities for this process which will take place in Ionad Spòrs Leòdhais following the close of poll at 10.00pm on 3 May 2007.
