By-Election Sgir’ Uige agus Ceann A Tuath nan Loch 29 November 2012
A By Election for the Sgir’ Uige agus Ceann A Tuath nan Loch Ward of Comhairle nan Eilean Siar will be held on Thursday 29 November 2012. The total electorate for the ward is 2433 after the last canvass at 3 September 2012. The By Election is to elect one councillor who will serve on a three-member ward which is one of the 5 three-member and 4 four-member wards that make up the Comhairle’s 9 multi-member wards.
The Comhairle undertook a review of Polling Districts and polling places in January 2012 and the current arrangements, including maps showing the current Polling District boundaries are available to view via the links provided below and Sgir’ Uige agus Ceann A Tuath nan Loch Ward is the areas shown as EO4A to EO4F.
The election will be conducted under the voting system called the `Single Transferable Vote' (STV). Voters in each ward indicate their preference of first, second, third etc. candidates. A quota and formulae system then decides who is elected, based on the preferences as indicated by the voters.
The Improvement Service and COSLA produced a guide for prospective candidates ahead of the May 2012 Scottish local government elections:
This is a useful guide which covers all aspects of the role, providing comprehensive guidance and practical advice on council/councillor duties, responsibilities and expectations. Current elected members also offer an insight into their own experiences.
