Crofting Commission Elections 2012

In accordance with the provisions of the Crofting Commission (Elections) (Scotland) Regulations 2011, nominations are invited from persons seeking election as members of the Crofting Commission.

A person is qualified to be a candidate at an election if the person is:
(a) aged 16 years or over; and
(b) either –
(i) has his or her name entered in the Register of Crofts or registered in the Crofting Register as a crofter or owner-occupier crofter; or
(ii) has been nominated by an elector

Additionally, the person must not be disqualified for any reason stated in the Regulations.

The Commission electoral area is divided into six constituencies:-

The elected representatives will be in post for five years from 1 April 2012 to 31 March 2017.  Each appointment is part-time and attracts a remuneration of £7,440 for a time commitment of four days per month.  Further details are available from the Crofters Commission website.

The nomination processed commenced on Thursday 5 January 2012 and completed nomination forms can be submitted to any of the above mentioned offices no later than 4.00pm, Thursday 26 January 2012.

Alistair Dodds, Chief Executive of the Highland Council, has been appointed as Returning Officer for the Crofting Commission Elections 2012.  An election will be held in each contested constituency by postal ballot, with votes having to be returned by 4.00pm on Thursday 15 March 2012.  The count will take place in Inverness on Friday 16 March 2012.
