European Parliamentary Election, 4 June 2009
Elections for the European Parliament take place every five years and member states of the European Union will go to the polls to elect members of the European Parliament (MEPs) between 4-7 June 2009. The UK is represented by 72 MEPs and there are 12 electoral regions in the UK. Scotland is an electoral region and is represented by 6 MEPs.
The UK poll will take place on Thursday 4 June 2009 between 7.00am and 10.00pm. The Count will take place in Ionad Spòrs Leòdhais on Friday 5 June 2009 but as the result of the Election cannot be announced until after the close of poll in all member states the formal declaration of results for Na H-Eileanan an Iar will be made at 9.00am on Monday 8 June 2009 in the Council Offices, Stornoway.
The Regional Returning Officer has overall responsibility for the Election for the Scotland Region but Local Returning Officers are responsible for the conduct of the poll in their local area. The Local Returning Officer for the Na H-Eileanan an Iar Constituency is Malcolm Burr, Chief Executive, Comhairle nan Eilean Siar.
At this Election political parties put forward a list of candidates. Individual candidates not affiliated to any political party can also stand. The ballot paper will bear the names of parties and of any individual candidates.
To vote you simply place a cross (X) against the party or individual candidate of your choice.
Ballot papers will be counted locally and the results sent to the Regional Returning Officer who will then carry out the required calculations to determine the 6 Scottish MEPs. The result will be announced on Monday 8 June 2009.
