14 July 2001The week up to July 14 saw a range of preparations to make sure that the Causeway was ready to come into use by normal traffic. Preparations were also made for the final trips by the ferry on Thursday July 12, and for the ceremonies associated with that. There were occasional showers in the morning of July 12 but the rain decided not to spoil the event itself. Praise was paid by the many visitors for the buffet laid on in the community centre after the ferry crossings and causeway cavalcade. The main areas of continued work involved the restoration of the landscape around the Uist end of the causeway where the haul road, quarry access and the quarry itself were rapidly disappearing under peat and turf. |
