Rural Scotland Price Survey

Highlands and Islands Enterprise, in partnership with Scottish Enterprise and the Scottish Executive Environment and Rural Affairs department, have commissioned a number of Rural Scotland Price Surveys (RSPS) since 2001. These surveys replace the more limited RSPS previously undertaken by Mackay Consultants.

The Survey collects price data from a sample of 60 rural locations and compares these with prices from 24 urban locations across Scotland. The RSPS does not attempt to measure cost of living or household expenditure patterns. Data is collected from 15 locations in Highland.

Based on survey information an index is generated for the price of certain items in 14 local authorities in Scotland. Of all 14 areas, the cost of food and catering is highest in the Western Isles. Full survey results are available at Rural Scotland Price Survey 2003
