Food Safety Service
The primary aim of the Comhairle's Food Safety Service is to ensure that food sold in and from the Outer Hebrides aims s to ensure safe food practices and premises with the primary functions of enforcing legislation, training people and promoting high standards.
There are around 4500 premises in the Outer Hebrides, which are covered by food safety legislation. An approximate breakdown of this figure is detailed below:

Premises are inspected according to the risks posed to the consumer and inspection frequencies range from 6 months (for the highest risks) to 3 years (for the lowest). Primary Producers are inspected less frequently.
