Gearranan Conservation Area

Map of Gearranan Conservation Area

Gearranan is a long established coastal settlement on the West Coast of Lewis. Historically it was highly dependant on the sea for its existence.

The present day blackhouse settlement is a comparatively recent development after the houses were all moved from lower down the valley to the South in the mid Nineteenth Century. Some of the houses were occupied up until the 1970’s but after being vacated rapidly fell into disrepair. Recognition of the Conservation value of the buildings came in 1976 when the area was designated a Conservation Area and later by the formation of a Trust in 1989 to manage the site. The Trust now manage the site as a visitor attraction.

A Conservation Area Appraisal has been completed and from this a Conservation Area Management Plan will provide guidance for new development in the area.
