Grant Schemes

The long term protection and enhancement of the historical environment is an important part of the Comhairle’s commitment to this aspect of its heritage. In 2009 the Comhairle introduced a grant scheme which would operate in all four conservation areas.

The new scheme will operate in the same way in all of the Conservation Areas. The scheme offers an intervention rate of 50% up to a maximum of £5,000 per application. You can learn more details of the application of the scheme and eligibility of projects by reading the Guidance Notes (PDF, 63k).

Before completing an Application Form (PDF, 107K) you are advised to contact the officer dealing with applications for your area (see the bottom of the form for contact details) to check the eligibility of your project and vailability of grant funds. Making an application with all the required documents can be a time consuming process and it would be prudent to discuss the requirements with the relevant officer. In addition we can often help in sourcing traditional material supplies or details of specialist contractors which can save you time and effort.

Stornoway Painting Scheme

A separate grant aid scheme has been set up for painting buildings in Stornoway. As the major gateway to the Outer Hebrides it is important to create a good impression for residents and visitors alike.

The scheme is restricted to a much smaller area within the Conservation Area – essentially the town centre which is the area of the Stornoway Townscape Heritage Initiative.

The Application Form (PDF, 107K) can be downloaded but in keeping with advice for the other grant scheme it is recommended that you contact the Conservation Officer, Ian Wilson, Tel. 01851 822690, BEFORE completing an application form to discuss your proposals to avoid delays in your application.

We welcome informal discussion on all potential grant applications prior to formal submission of an application.
