Howmore

Howmore on the Atlantic coast of South Uist has been in existence for many centuries. Possibly an early christian site its name is probably derived from the norse ‘haugr’ meaning burial ground. Much of its history is derived from its christian associations and buildings and at one time had an international reputation. It was also, at one time, the regional centre of the Clanranald  lordships. Its significance declined in later years and gradually the settlement tended to stagnate. There has been some new development recently and although a number of old buildings have been cleared away the pattern of the earlier settlement can still be seen. A number of original buildings have been retained and adapted to new uses i.e. the former corn mill. There are significant ruins on the Northern edge of the settlement which are testimony to its early christian origins.

A Conservation Area Appraisal has been carried out and from this a Conservation Area Management Plan will provide guidance for new development in the area.
