Ruisgearraidh

Ruisgearraidh,or the several variations in spelling (Ruisgary, Risgary, etc) is the largest settlement on Berneray. Located around Loch Bagh on the East side of the island it is a haven from the Atlantic Storms. As a fertile location and a good location for a harbour the Bay had attracted significant numbers of settlers in the past. Today with a much depleted level of population the Conservation Area includes the remains of many of the blackhouses. Today with a much depleted level of population the Conservation Area includes the remains of many of the blackhouses. Some have  been restored in the past and there has been A growing interest in the re-use of these buildings. However, many remain derelict and continue to deteriorate. They are a valuable record of the past and can make a valuable contribution to the settlement. Despite modern development and interventions the essential character of the township still remains. The designation of the Conservation Area is aimed at protecting and enhancing that character.

A Conservation Area Appraisal has been completed and from this a Conservation Area Management Plan will provide guidance for new development in the area.
