Progress on Balivanich Primary School Site February 2011
Works have been progressing well on the new Balivanich School further to the commencement of the steel erection works in late 2010. Regular progress meetings have been held between the Comhairle, Sgoiltean Ùra and FMP during the construction process. There has been some loss of time due to adverse weather and high winds and this has had an effect on aspects of the roof construction but the Service Availability date remains on programme - 28 July 2011.
On site, the majority of internal partitions and block walls have been constructed and rooms have been formed. The mechanical and electrical first fix has also commenced and the WISP team are in the process of agreeing preferred room layouts with the school stakeholders. With regards to the external works, preparations are being made in relation to the relocation of the HIAL obstruction light currently erected on the existing old school building, with demolition of this building expected to commence in March.
A consultation meeting focussing on external and landscaping works was recently held with stakeholders. This gave school staff, parents and community representatives the opportunity to discuss the external spaces around the school with the designers and provide input on the types of play equipment, planting areas and environmental features they would like to see included within the school grounds. Sustainable Uist and local SNH representatives attended the meeting and made a valuable contribution to the discussion. The formation of the access road, play areas and synthetic pitch is ongoing and these features will become more apparent over the coming months as the site works progress.
