Nicolson Institute

The Nicolson Institute is the largest Secondary School in the Western Isles, located on Springfield Road in Stornoway. The current campus comprises various buildings and extends over both sides of the road. The Project Board is considering various options to enable the campus to be consolidated on one site on the north side of Springfield Road, providing for a maximum roll of 1100 pupils.

North side of Springfield Road: The current proposal is that part of the existing Main Building be retained to provide sufficient accommodation for 300 pupils; this retained accommodation will continue to be maintained by the Comhairle, until such time as it is no longer required. It is envisaged that the school’s roll will decrease in future years to less than 800.

Springfield North - Listed Building

A new 800-pupil school will be built adjacent to this retained accommodation. Various buildings will require to be demolished to accommodate the new 800-pupil Secondary.

It should be noted that these are the current intentions and may be subject to change as the project progresses.
