Scalpay School is the first in the Western Isles to to be awarded a Gold Health Promoting Schools Status Award. In order to achieve this award schools have to show that they go the extra mile for assisting their pupils to become more aware of all kinds of health issues. This involves not only the obvious topics such as diet and fitness but also takes into account how the pupils and staff relate to each other, the environment of the school and the schools relationship with its community.
This award is managed through a partnership between NHS Health Promotion Department and Comhairle nan Eilean Siar’s Education Department.
All schools in Scotland have been asked to consider how they can become health promoting by the year 2007.
