WELCOME FOR MARINE ENERGY ANNOUNCEMENT

Comhairle nan Eilean Siar has welcomed the DTI announcement of £50m for the marine power industry.

Chairman of Sustainable Development, Cllr. Archie Campbell, said: “The Western Isles has abundant marine energy resources and the development of technology to harness that energy is essential. This new money will enable industry to build on the work of the past few years. In particular, the Western Isles coastline has been identified as a premium location for a cluster of wave power machines and hopefully that will soon be a reality. Wave power especially will be essential in meeting future energy needs and the Comhairle will work closely with the Scottish Executive and the DTI to ensure the resources, skills and infrastructure of the Western Isles play a central role as the renewable energy technologies of tomorrow become realities.”
