Opening of Aird Community Garden, Point, Isle of Lewis

27 August 2004

Major Step Forward in Community Renewal Programme

Tiumpan Ward Environmental Renewal Programme (TWERP) has announced the opening of an impressive new Community Garden at Aird School, Point as the latest in its ambitious programme of environmental projects in the Tiumpan area of Point. The Garden will be opened on Friday 27 August 2004 by Mrs Murdina Macdonald of Aird, a well known retired teacher.
Building on the successful completion of a range of walkways, picnic areas and viewpoints, the new Community Garden enriches the environment of the area and provides a beautiful new amenity for school children visitors and locals alike. The Garden, designed by Robert Stubbington of Comhairle nan Eilean Siar and laid out by Dave Fisher of Portvoller, provides an explosion of colour in what was previously waste ground to the rear of Aird School. The Garden makes an ideal location for picnics and informal gatherings or for just reflecting on the beauty of nature in a very peaceful environment.

TWERP Chairman and local Councillor, Donald John MacSween, said, “This Garden represents the latest in a series of ambitious new initiatives which make the Tiumpan Ward a better place to visit and to live in. The integrated environmental improvements spearheaded by TWERP build on our already impressive natural environment to make this area a ‘must see’ location for visitors and islanders. Tiumpan Head is among the best areas in Europe for whale, dolphin and bird watching and the facilities we are providing, ranging from picnic areas and viewpoints to bird hides, make the Tiumpan area an attractive place for a family day out on an environmental theme”. Mr MacSween explained that the whole programme had only been made possible through the Comhairle’s ‘Action by Communities on their Environment’ (ACE) grant scheme and the community’s willing support.
