Comhairle nan Eilean Siar has welcomed the announcement that the Arnish yard is to re-open producing steel towers and other renewables equipment.

Vice-Convener Angus Campbell said: “The investment and commitment for the Arnish yard has paid off and I am delighted that the upgraded facility is to once again provide local employment. The renewables industry offers great potential benefits for the Western Isles and Arnish is ideally suited to play a vital supply role as the sector develops. This is excellent news for the Western Isles”.

Cllr Archie Campbell, Chairman of Sustainable Development, said: “It is very much to be welcomed that the company intend to produce steel towers and other renewables equipment associated with wind turbines. In the longer term there may well be potential for other renewable technology to be manufactured at Arnish and the experience gained will put the yard and its workforce in a good position to compete in the emerging market”.
