This year saw the introduction of new fireworks legislation and Safetywise ran a local themed fireworks campaign, which included the competitions, sponsored by CWS Ltd and Safetywise. (All Primary 1 to 6 School pupils in the Western Isles were invited to enter a fireworks safety poster competition along with a Primary 7 fireworks quiz.) << File: Safetywise Logo.doc >>

Martin Haigh, Chair of the Safetywise Committee, said that the standard of competition entries were very high and that all the participants showed an illustrative knowledge of the many safety and anti social issues concerning fireworks.

He said he was pleased to announce that there were no reported fireworks injuries in the Western Isles this year. Mr Haigh also said that the fire service in the Western Isles had no callouts for fireworks or bonfire incidents, although there were several incidents in the Highlands and Islands operational area.

Marina MacSween, from Trading Standards CNES, said that she was impressed with the level of understanding that school pupils demonstrated both in the competition entries and at recent school visits. Mrs MacSween added that children were particularly receptive to safety messages and were passing on the information to their parents and older siblings.

Sgt Roddy Mackay from the Northern Constabulary was also pleased with this years local fireworks returns. He said there were only 4 reports concerning fireworks in the Western Isles with 5 individuals being charged with offences under the Fireworks Act 2003.

Calum Watt SSPCA inspector said that this fireworks season he had only received 1 report of a dog that appeared to have been frightened by fireworks.

Martin Haigh said that it was clear that this year’s joint approach by the Police, Fire service, Trading Standards and the SSPCA, along with the Calamity Calum leaflet campaign, had achieved a marked improvement in minimising the number of fireworks incidents in the Western Isles.
