| An experimental scheme to ban traffic from Stornoway Town centre precinct between the hours of 10.30am and 6pm comes into operation from Tuesday 7th December.
The traffic order, which prohibits all vehicles without a permit entering the precinct between the stated hours, will be in effect for a year after which it will be reviewed. Fixed penalty notices will be issued to vehicles breaching the ban.
Chairman of the Stornoway Car Parking Working Group, Cllr Angus McCormack, said; “The aim is to make Stornoway Town Centre a safer and better place to shop, work and live. This complements other initiatives to regenerate the town centre and will help create a better shopping environment for locals and visitors alike”.
In addition twelve parking spaces are to be designated for use by disabled badge holders only and will be supported by an order enabling the police to enforce this restriction. These spaces are located around the perimeter of the precinct on South Beach, Perceval Square, Francis Street and Kenneth Street.
