| CNES Trading Standards are issuing a reminder to consumers who want to reduce the number of cold calls they receive from UK companies trying to sell goods and services over the phone.
Officers advise consumers to consider registering with the Telephone Preference Service. This service is free to consumers who can ask for the details of their telephone or fax lines to be removed from many cold callers’ marketing lists. TPS can be contacted on 020 7291 3320 or at
www.tpsonline.org.uk
Trading Standards also report a phone scam recently circulating in the Western Isles where consumers receive a telephone message stating they have won a fantastic prize. To hear further details they just have to dial 9 . If consumers do call back they are connected to a premium rate number. This scam was also highlighted on the BBC ‘Watchdog’ programme. To avoid inadvertently running up large telephone bills Trading Standards suggest contacting your telephone service provider to block calls to premium rate numbers from your phone.
