Trading Standards Officers from Comhairle nan Eilean Siar and Police
Officers from the Northern Constabulary have issued a warning to
consumers regarding telephone calls which ask for the recipients’
personal bank details. There are currently reports in the Western
Isles of direct sales calls which claim to be from mobile phone
or telecommunications companies.
A Trading Standards spokesperson said that consumers should be
wary when supplying bank and other personal details over the phone.
' These callers can sound very convincing and plausible. Consumers
may be persuaded to inadvertantly give bank details which another
party may then be able to use to access your account without your
knowledge.'
The spokesperson added 'If you are concerned about the number of
sales calls you are receiving you should consider registering your
telephone number with the Telephone Preference Service on 0845 070
0707. This should stop the majority of direct sales telephone calls
to your home.'
Sgt Roddy Mackay from the Northern Constabulary’s Community
Safety Department said 'Do not disclose any personal details on
cold calls, if in doubt contact your bank'
If you are worried about a recent telephone sales call which you
have received please contact Trading Standards on 01851 709577.
