Work began this week on a state-of-the-art £3.2m residential
care facility for South Uist. The South Uist Care Development will
be a first rate facility for people who require residential care.
The facility has been developed in close consultation with the communities
of South Uist who have long made the case for improved facilities
for the social and health care of the people of the area.
The new Care Development has been designed by the Comhairle’s
Technical Services Department and will feature 18 accommodation
units, guest rooms, library, greenhouse and 3 garden areas. The
original Daliburgh Hospital, built more than a century ago, has
been preserved within the design for the new care centre which will
replace Uist House which is now over 40 years old. A short ‘turf
cutting’ ceremony, attended by the Chair and Vice-Chair of
Social Work and local Councillors and representatives of local contactors
Macinnes Brothers marked the start of work on the project.
Chairman of Social Work, Cllr Murdo Macleod, said: "This is
an excellent step forward in the provision of residential accommodation
in the Western Isles. When residential care is required it is only
right that people throughout the Islands have access to the best
of care and that is what will be provided with this project. The
Comhairle is determined that the standards of residential care will
meet the expectations of local communities and allow people who
require care the dignity, comfort and attention that they deserve”.
