Trading standards Officers are warning consumers in the Western Isles to be on the lookout for letters purporting to be from an external auditor from the United Overseas Bank in Singapore.
The letter claims that the recipient has the same surname as a deceased investor whose estate can now be claimed. The letter then asks for personal details such as your date of birth, e-mail address etc.
A spokesperson from Trading Standards warned consumers that the letter is a scam based on previous similar West African fraud letters and e mails:” there are many risks involved in getting involved in this type of scam, the perpetrators will use the information you have given them to empty your bank account, or they may convince you to send cash up front.”
If you have lost money to this fraud you should contact Trading Standards on 01851 709577
