Work Underway On Breasclete Roads Scheme

14 June 2005

Work has started this week on a £568,447.58 road improvement scheme on the A858 at Breasclete in Lewis.

The scheme has been funded by the Comhairle’s Roads to Communities Programme alongside Highlands and Islands Special Transitional Programme.

Local Councillor Alex MacDonald said:
“I am delighted that this work is underway bringing transport improvements for the local community, business and visitors”.

The main works will be carried out from the North of Breasclete for 700m, and 380m North of Tolsta Chaolais. These works are situated on overlying peat and glacial till which varies from zero to over 4m over Lewisian gneiss.

Transportation Chairman Councillor Donald Muntard said:
“This major scheme is part of the Comhairle’s ongoing road improvement work for the Western Isles and the European Funding element shows the importance of accessing funds for remote areas.”

Visibility improvements are also being carried out close to Loch na Muilne. This will provide a source of rock for the works. In addition to this there will also be a re-alignment of the Tolsta Chaolais village junction to improve visiblity and manoevering which will be funded from the Comhairle’s road safety minor improvement budget and will be “bolted on” to the main works.

Two cattle grids will be added. The one at Duone Carloway will be replaced and a new one will be added at Tolsta Chaolais, which will be funded by both Grazing Communities.

Aggregate Industries are the contractors for the scheme, which is expected to be completed by the end of October this year.
