| Comhairle nan Eilean Siar has welcomed an announcement from the Scottish Executive of an initial contribution of almost £5m towards the costs of repairing storm damage in the Western Isles.
Last January hurricane force winds caused extensive damage throughout the Western Isles.
Since then the Comhairle has been in negotiations with the Executive on the costs of carrying out the required repair work. At the beginning of the summer the Comhairle submitted information to the Executive which outlined that approximately £15m would be required to carry out all repair and betterment work.
Speaking today the Convener of Comhairle nan Eilean Siar, Mr Alex MacDonald, said:
“This is good news for the Western Isles and is a welcome first contribution from the Scottish Executive towards the costs of repairing the infrastructure of the Islands. We will now be assessing priorities and progressing work urgently. We are grateful to the Scottish Executive and will be continuing discussions on additional assistance for other areas of concern such as coastal zone management works and a new school at Balivanich. I am also grateful to our MSP Alasdair Morrison for the work he has put in behind the scenes.”
