The latest phase in the process of inspection of the education functions of Comhairle nan Eilean Siar has resulted in a highly positive report. In relation to continuous improvement the report confirms a much greater sense of purpose and direction. Headteachers and Officers are working well together and there is a shared understanding of the Authority’s vision of ‘Aiming for Advancement’.
The report is also most encouraging in that in relation to the Main Points for Action - which are a standard feature in all HM Inspectorate reports - the Authority has made good progress in every area.
The Comhairle’s Director of Education, Murdo Macleod, commented “In the first phase of the inspection process HM Inspectorate identified approaches to planning for improvement within the Education Department as one of the key strengths of the service. The latest report confirms that assessment to have been accurate. The Education Service has been under very extensive and rigorous scrutiny but has substantially benefited from the process. Our responsibility now is to maintain this momentum both within the Department and in every one of the Authority’s schools”.
Councillor Norman L MacDonald added “Since becoming Chairman of the Education and Children’s Services Committee I’ve always said that the Comhairle’s aim is to provide the best possible education for pupils throughout the Western Isles. We will continue to strive for improvement and build on these strengths. The report also makes it clear that there are issues to be addressed in relation to surplus capacity and question of Best Value relating to the structure of S1/2 delivery. We will continue to address these issues but in the most positive ways in the interests of the education of children in the future”.
