The Vice-Convener of Comhairle nan Eilean Siar, Mr. Angus Campbell, has described the ‘considerable concerns’ of many in the Western Isles for some time over the suitability of the MV Muirneag for freight sailings across the Minch.
His comments come following the recent incident when the Muirneag reportedly ended up 60 miles off course in appalling weather conditions.
Mr. Campbell has now written to the Chairman of Caledonian MacBrayne, Dr. Harold Mills to describe how many people, including drivers of haulage vehicles, are extremely uneasy about the possibility of having to endure a similar experience again.
He also raises the fact that delays and inability to move goods can have an impact on sectors of the local economy, particularly those related to aquaculture and fishing.
Mr. Campbell goes on to state: “Whilst I appreciate that some of the weather conditions we have experienced recently have been extreme, it is highly likely that that we will face similar conditions over the winter. Obviously it is important that there is not a repeat of the situation that the crew and passengers of the MV Muirneag found themselves in last week and that risks to life and property are avoided. I know you will share these sentiments and I hope you can take these comments into consideration of the future of freight sailing on the Ullapool-Stornoway route and whether the MV Muirneag is the best vessel for this lifeline service.”
