‘Hebrides TV’: Broadband Television for the Outer Hebrides 13 June 2006

Thanks to broadband, Outer Hebrides residents will soon be able to view locally generated programming and video content through their PC.

Comhairle nan Eilean Siar, Western Isles Enterprise and other project partners, have received funding from LEADER+ to take the first steps in developing community-based broadband television for the Outer Hebrides.

During 2006/07, a pilot service will be developed to act as a demonstrator of local broadband television. This will identify the level of interest among residents, agencies, businesses and the wider world, and assess the funding and technology requirements of a longer-term service.

The distinctive culture and community of the Outer Hebrides offers an opportunity for a service that can promote the best of the environment, produce and culture of the islands, in conjunction with providing an innovative solution to delivering local news, community information and public services. Initial work on the project has demonstrated that there is a wealth of local activity and events that could be filmed and made available on-line.

The project partners are currently seeking consultancy support in the implementation of the pilot. Activities will include managing the development of a web portal for ‘Hebrides.TV’ that will act as a platform for pre-existing and newly generated footage. Consultants will be required to liaise with the community and voluntary sector to identify, and encourage the development of, content for the site.
