“Contrary to the impression given in some reports, Comhairle nan Eilean Siar has taken a long term view in managing its budget over the current three year local government settlement from 2005-08.

The careful use of resources has meant that Comhairle has had sufficient balances to have planned budget deficits whilst time is taken to achieve efficiency savings that will bring the budget back into balance.

Like all councils the Comhairle faces significant financial pressures in the next few years, however this approach means that as far as possible these will be addressed without having any detrimental impact on services and that any changes that are required can be achieved in a measured way.

Even without any further savings the Comhairle will still have £800K of balances in March 2008. However, the Comhairle has already agreed an initial package of around £1.7m of savings that will reduce the ongoing deficit and increase reserves.”
