Call For Full Speed Ahead On Renewables 7 November 2007

Comhairle nan Eilean Siar has urged the Scottish Government to move full speed ahead with developing renewable energy in Scotland. The call comes as the UK Government signalled its intentions to pursue nuclear power in yesterday’s Queens Speech.

The Scottish Government is opposed to new nuclear power stations in Scotland and the Comhairle says this leaves no option but to vigorously pursue renewable energy as Scotland’s primary supply.

Vice-Convener Angus Campbell said: “Renewable energy is the key to secure energy supplies for Scotland and the Scottish Government should pursue this at full speed. They could start by taking a decision on the Lewis Windpower scheme. The delays in the planning process for windpower applications is stifling development and preventing the Highlands and Islands realising their renewables potential. There is also a knock on effect of uncertainty for yards such as Arnish which should have a secure future manufacturing towers and other renewables equipment.”

Another windfarm application for Lewis at Eishken has been referred to a Public Inquiry despite having the Comhairle’s approval.

Mr Campbell said: “Even a three turbine scheme in Harris, which had the support of the local community, was originally referred to a public inquiry, although that was eventually overturned in a victory for common sense.

If Scotland is going to (rightly in my view) reject nuclear power, then the only option is again the common sense one - to pursue the renewable alternatives. The Highlands and Islands have the best renewable resources in the UK - let’s get on with it”.
