Responding to an announcement on additional funding this year for central heating installations, Councillor Norman MacLeod, Chair of the Comhairle’s Local Housing Strategy Member Officer Working Group, said: “The Comhairle welcomes the announcement today by the Scottish Government of an additional £7 million this year to allow the installation of central heating in more houses across Scotland.
In the Western Isles over 1,200 houses have had new heating systems installed under the “Central Heating Scheme” in recent years at a rate of over 350 houses a year, but the number of installations carried out so far this year has been less than 75.
We look forward to more households benefiting from this additional funding and also the reduction in Fuel Poverty levels in the Western Isles, which are the highest in Scotland.
Further information about the Central Heating Scheme can be obtained by phoning Scottish Gas (who administer the scheme on behalf of the Scottish Government) on
0800 316 1653
I would urge Scottish Gas to process applications quickly and get this work done to provide warmer homes and reduce fuel poverty for older members of our communities.
I also urge all elderly householders, whether in private rented accommodation or owner occupiers, who do not have central heating fitted in their home to apply for a grant for this work.”
