Samples have confirmed that there is some white asbestos in the locality of premises in Church Street in Stornoway. White asbestos is the least dangerous form of the substance.
Inquiries are continuing but initial indications suggest that the cause may have been due to the power cleaning of a roof.
The Comhairle is offering information to the occupiers of the affected premises and further advice has been sought from the Health and Safety Executive, the Director of Public Health and specialist contractors as to whether further clean up is required. The Comhairle has also spoken to Health Protection Scotland who have concurred with the actions being taken.
A spokesperson for the Comhairle said: “We would urge everyone to exercise caution and take specialist advice before deciding on whether to clean any roof thought to contain asbestos.”
