Castle Plans Discussed With Trump Director 08 July 2008

Representatives of the Comhairle and Stornoway Trust met today with George Sorial, Managing Director of International Development for the Trump Organization.

Mr Sorial, who has strong family ties with Lewis, was on the island for a few days and took the opportunity to visit Lews Castle.  He was given an extensive tour of the building which included climbing the spiral staircase of the main tower, which offers a panoramic view of Stornoway and beyond.

Commenting on his visit to the Castle Mr Sorial said:

‘The site is beautiful and the project has great merit.  There is no doubt that with proper planning, the Castle can be restored to its original magnificence and serve as the jewel of Stornoway.  We look forward to reviewing the plans in greater detail.’

Representatives of the Comhairle and Stornoway Trust briefed Mr Sorial on the plans to develop the castle as a high quality hotel and museum.

Cllr. Angus Campbell, Chairman of the Lews Castle Trust Steering Group, said.

‘We had a very good discussion with Mr Sorial, both about the Castle and also about the general development of our islands and our tourism potential.  We are looking for a private sector partner to take the Castle project to the next stage and we will continue our dialogue with the Trump Organization.’
