School Christmas Cards Add to Christmas Cheer
Christmas cards are adding to the festive atmosphere on the streets of Stornoway this year thanks to a joint initiative between Comhairle nan Eilean Siar’s schools and the town’s Amenity Trust.
The idea, which originated in Moldova, involved children from 14 schools across Lewis designing and producing giant Christmas ‘cards’. Comhairle nan Eilean Siar funds Christmas decorations and lights in Stornoway, Tarbert, Balivanich and Castlebay but the cards are an attractive and much admired addition.
Comhairle Leader, Angus Campbell, said: “The Comhairle is pleased to support communities in making the town look at its best for Christmas. The cards are a great idea and congratulations to all the children who worked hard to add to the festive spirit”.
A competition to judge the best card was won by Lionel School with Bayble coming second and Stornoway Primary third. £75, £50 and £25 go to the respective school funds. It is intended to use the cards in future years.
Stornoway Amenity Trust spokesperson Tony Robson, said:
“It was good to see such enthusiasm from the schoolchildren who took part. We hope people will enjoy the creativity of the pupils this year and in years to come”.
Charlie Nicolson, who saw similar decorations in Moldova and thought it might be a good idea to do something similar in Stornoway, said; “When the lights went on, it was amazing the number of people who commented on how fantastic the cards looked. The efforts of the children are really to be applauded and the town centre looks truly festive thanks to the Comhairle, the Amenity Trust, local businesses and the children. This has been a real community effort”.
The Schools which produced cards were: Back, Balallan, Bayble, Bragar, Breasclete, Knock, Laxdale, Lionel, Sandwick, Sgoil na Loch, Stornoway, Tong, Uig and Carloway.
