Comhairle nan Eilean Siar
Press Release
3rd March 2009
Response To Launch of Rural Schools Bill
The Comhairle welcomes the comments made by the Minister that "The Bill will leave the consultation and decision making processes squarely and rightly in the hands of the local authorities who are responsible for seeking always to improve the quality and standards of the education which they deliver to communities right across their areas.” In its representations on the proposed Bill the Comhairle stated: ‘The provision of education is devolved to local authorities. Consequently, authorities should have the freedom to decide the pattern of local provision without recourse to Ministers. This approach is in accordance with the spirit of the Concordat agreed between local authorities and Scottish Government.
The Comhairle also made the point that none of the proposed measures regarding consultation would present a problem as the Comhairle already has most of them in place in terms of its consultation process
