A proposal for outline planning permission has been submitted to the Comhairle.
The new Nicolson Institute will be part of the Western Isles Schools Project being delivered by Sgoiltean Ùra on behalf of Comhairle nan Eilean Siar and, along with new schools at Tarbert, Point, Balivanich and the Westside, represents a significant and much-needed improvement to the Comhairle’s Schools Estate.
Although the vast majority of the school will be new, the Pentland Building and Matheson Hall will be refurbished as part of the project and along with the Clock Tower will form important parts of the new school reflecting the heritage and history of The Nicolson Institute.
Current proposals include the replacement of the substandard and underused Acres Pitch as part of the new school campus and a physical link to Ionad Spors Leodhas. These are important aspects of the new school which will aim to provide a better integration with existing sports and leisure facilities.
The current proposed schedule for construction is for a start to be made in May 2010 with the new buildings being available for the start of the new term in August 2012.
