Press Release
20th March 2009

Celebrations For Library’s First Ten Years

Since Stornoway Public library opened ten years ago, over 1.1 million books and CDs have been loaned to the public, enough to reach to the edge of the Earth’s atmosphere if laid end to end! In addition, customers have spent 140,746 hours on the public computers!

These were some of the interesting facts revealed at today’s 10th birthday celebrations for the Library in Cromwell Street, Stornoway.

A series of events took place including the cutting of a celebration cake by Annie Macdonald, Vice-Chair of the Comhairle’s Sustainable Development Committee.

This followed a lively birthday Bookstart Rhyme Time for the youngest readers.

In the afternoon a special edition of ‘The Local History File’ for Isles FM was being held with local historians Norrie Macgregor, Frank Thomson and Malcolm Macdonald.

Other activities included a performance by a young musicians group and a general knowledge quiz.

Cllr Macdonald said: “Today is about Celebration and looking forward to the next 10 years of Stornoway Library with optimism and excitement – aiming to keep the library at the heart of the community, trusted and well regarded by local people and playing a key part in the renewal and regeneration of the town.”
