Comhairle Supports WWF Earth Hour

At the start of March this year Seamus Cunningham, a pupil at the Nicolson Institute in Stornoway and a supporter of the World Wildlife Fund, saw the plans for the WWF Earth Hour being held on Saturday 28th March. This is a world wild event for individuals and organisations to show their support for a sustainable future. The floodlights of important buildings around the world will be switched off on Saturday evening for an hour.

Stornoway will be doing its part with lights being switched off at the War Memorial, the Sports Centre and the Council Offices.

Seamus contacted Councillor Charlie Nicolson and asked for some help in spreading the idea around. Charlie said “I have to thank Seamus for his great idea in putting Stornoway on the map together with other places around the world in support of the WWF initiative. I have asked the technical staff in the Comhairle to arrange for the lights of three important buildings to be altered for that weekend. Individuals as well as councils can all help, and if they can switch their own lights off on Saturday night for an hour it will add to this worldwide event”.

Angus Campbell, Leader of the Comhairle added “We can all play our part in reducing our energy consumption and this is an opportunity to show that the Outer Hebrides is keen to play its part”.
