29th Annual Assembly Of The CPMR Islands Commission, Stornoway 7th-8th May
The 29th Annual Assembly of the Commission of Peripheral Maritime Regions (CPMR) Islands Commission will take place in Stornoway on Thursday 7th to Friday the 8th May. The conference also comes at an appropriate time as the 9th of May is Europe Day. The theme of this year’s conference will be “Territorial Cohesion seen from the Edge, and Reducing Handicaps, Seizing Opportunities”. There will be a variety of speakers from a number of European Union countries and also representatives from the European Commission.
Leader of the Comhairle, Angus Campbell stated: “I am delighted that the Western Isles are hosting this year’s Conference. The Outer Hebrides and Scotland have been the beneficiary of substantial European funding in the past and this Conference will provide opportunities to discuss current economic and energy challenges. These discussions could lead to possible solutions and strategies which will help to revitalize the Islands’ economy and provide a template for other European communities with similar aspirations. This is also an excellent opportunity for us to showcase the language, the culture and the industries of the Western Isles. Delegates will spend an afternoon on field trips where they will visit locations featuring new enterprises such as the Harris Tweed Mill in Shawbost and the Hebridean Seaweed Company at Arnish Point.”
