Comhairle Approves Community Owned Windfarms
At a meeting of the Environment and Protective Services Committee, Comhairle nan Eilean Siar today approved four community owned wind farm projects in the Western Isles totalling an output of 18.6MW.
Leader of the Comhairle, Angus Campbell said:
“Several weeks ago Willie Roe, Chairman of Highlands and Islands Enterprise, stated his disappointment that the Western Isles currently had an output of only 4mw. I am now pleased to say that following today’s approval we have considerably increased the consented output by 18.6MW. The next crucial step is to liaise with the relevant agencies and key partners to ensure the connection upgrade to the National Grid takes place as quickly as possible. The Comhairle is now urgently seeking discussions with The National Grid, Ofgem, The Crown Estate, SHETL, Scottish Power, The Scottish Government and the UK Government to get this issue resolved as quickly as possible”.
The four community owned schemes which were approved today are:
- Three wind turbine generators totalling 2.7mw at Loch Sminig, Upper Barvas, Isle of Lewis.
- One wind turbine generator totalling 900kw at North Tolsta, Isle of Lewis.
- Three wind turbines totalling a maximum of 9mw on the Pentland Road, Isle of Lewis.
- Three wind turbines totalling 6mw at Loch Càrnan, South Uist.
