Comhairle nan Eilean Siar
Press Release
1st June 2009
Connect To The Benefits Of Broadband
Organisations in the Outer Hebrides are set to benefit from an awareness campaign aimed at stimulating the uptake of broadband, irrespective of the service provider a business or organisation chooses. The “Live Hebrides – Broadband your Horizons” campaign is targeted at businesses and communities informing them of the benefits of broadband, how to get connected, and where to locate more information on broadband services.
Broadband is now one of the fastest growing technologies in history. Councillor Archie Campbell, Chair of Sustainable Development Committee at Comhairle nan Eilean Siar said:
“The “Live Hebrides – Broadband your Horizons” campaign is an awareness programme aimed at driving uptake and highlighting the benefits of broadband to the communities of the Outer Hebrides. Organisations can improve efficiency and effectiveness, whilst also giving them the opportunity to access new markets.”
A specialist, impartial advice service begins this month and will be available to all organisations across all islands. The team of specialist advisors will offer expert, advice and will also work with Business Gateway to offer a series of training workshops towards the end of June.
Broadband is well on the way to becoming a vital utility like water or electricity. It has the ability to dramatically change people's lives and create new business opportunities. It allows the download of files at much faster speeds and enables the user to send or receive emails with large attachments in seconds as opposed to minutes. With the advent of broadband, online backup is also more secure, automatic and cost effective.
Whether ordering supplies, researching products, sharing information or dealing with customers on the other side of the world, broadband can facilitate all of these activities. It also brings financial savings with one flat monthly fee for ‘always on’ high speed internet access and the freedom to use the web and the phone simultaneously.
With current economy changes it seems every organisation needs to embrace technology into the heartbeat of how they operate, in order to stay ahead.
Councillor Archie Campbell, Chair of Sustainable Development Committee further commented:
“We recognise the important role that broadband has to play in developing the social and economic sectors in our communities. This campaign and the specialist support offered will enable organisations to exploit the opportunities that come from broadband and, the various technologies.”
The campaign has been fully supported by Comhairle nan Eilean Siar, Highlands and Islands Enterprise and match funding was awarded through the European Regional Development Fund. To find out more contact the Live Hebrides Team:
