Comhairle nan Eilean Siar
Press Release
3rd September 2009
Economic Boost For Isles
The Western Isles economy will receive a £9m boost between now and 2011, through Comhairle nan Eilean Siar’s capital programme and Housing investment, Councillors heard today.
A range of construction projects were announced at today’s meeting of the Comhairle’s Policy and Resources Committee as well as funding programmes including the Community Regeneration Challenge Fund, the Community Renewable Support Fund, Community Land Resources Development Programme and Creative Hebrides. These will benefit projects across the islands from a Multi-Function Business Hub in Galson to shoreline improvements in Castlebay. Capital projects with a total value of £4.18m were given the go ahead.
In addition, Hebridean Housing Partnership will spend around £5m on new housing projects between September 2009 and March 2010. The bulk of this is money secured by the Comhairle through the Affordable Housing Investment Programme.
Comhairle Leader Angus Campbell said: “These schemes agreed today will provide some much needed work in the local economy. The Comhairle and its Community Planning Partners, such as HHP, are committed to doing what we can to sustain the local economy and this package of measures will assist in that ongoing task.”
