Press Release

19th October 2009

Public meeting On Coastal Changes

Significant new reports by Scottish Natural Heritage on changes taking place on the Uists’ coasts are to be launched at a public meeting to be held in South Uist on Monday evening.

The meeting, which is to be in Talla na Iochdair at 7.30pm on 26th October and hosted by CoastHebrides, will hear Coastal Ecology Advisor, Stewart Angus, present three new reports on the Background and Impacts of the January 2005 Storm; the Uist Land Drainage Network; and, Implications of a Changing Climate for People and Nature.

A number of studies have been completed in the Uists since January 2005 including high tech remote sensing surveys and Stewart will use these on Monday evening to demonstrate the vulnerability of much of the west coast to erosion and flooding.

Those attending will also get an update on progress with the South Ford Hydrodynamics Study which is shortly to change its emphasis from geographical aspects to involving people living in the area in, for example, assessments of future flooding risk.
