Comhairle nan Eilean Siar

Press Release - 29th January 2014

Cllr. Archie Campbell Steps Down as Chair of the Sustainable Development Committee

The Leader and the Convener of Comhairle nan Eilean Siar have paid tribute to the work of Cllr. Archie Campbell who has stepped down as Chair of the Sustainable Development Committee.

A former teacher, Mr Campbell was elected to the Comhairle in 1999 and took up the position of Vice-Chair of Sustainable Development. He has been Chair of the Committee since 2003. He said: ‘I have decided to step down as Chair of Sustainable Development but I will continue to work as a Councillor.  I have thoroughly enjoyed my time as Chair of the Committee and I pass on best wishes to my successor”.

Angus Campbell, Leader of the Comhairle, said: “I have very much enjoyed working with Archie on Economic Development issues over the many years he has been in post. He is a hard working Councillor and he has achieved a great deal over the years he has been a Committee Chair. As well as being a master of his brief, Archie is renowned for his sense of humour and sharp wit during meetings and I know he will continue to greatly contribute to the work of the Comhairle and in representing the people of the Beinn na Faoghla agus Uibhist A Tuath ward.

Convener Norman Macdonald said: “Archie has been and will continue to be, a reliable and gifted representative and spokesperson for the people of North Uist and Benbecula. It is not always an easy job to be a Committee Chair, particularly in times where hard decisions have had to be made but Archie has conscientiously fulfilled his duties and at all times has been a pleasure to work with.”

The Sustainable Development Committee will appoint a new Chair at its meeting on 5th February.
