Press Release - 23rd May 2014

CNES Trading Standards Advise of New Consumer Regulations

CNES Trading Standards Service is advising local traders that important new consumer regulations are introduced on June 13, 2014 which will have an impact on their businesses, particularly if they sell online or away from their normal trade premises.

From that date, new rules are introduced governing the amount of information that they must provide to consumers about the goods and services they provide. This is to allow consumers to make an informed choice about the goods and services they are seeking to purchase.

The new rules also clarify the circumstances under which consumers can cancel their contracts when they have bought something through a distance contract or off trade premises. In addition, the current cancellation period is increased from 7 to 14 days.

A spokesperson said, “it is important that traders understand and implement these new rules and they can download guidance documents from the Trading Standards Institute website on Some of the new rules are quite technical and our officers are available to provide any further clarification or assistance that traders may require.”

The spokesperson continued, “failure to comply with these new rules could prove costly for traders and we would advise them to take the time to study them and amend their documentation and websites so that they are ready for the 13 June. They can contact us for further assistance on 01851 822694.”
